SILK PREPARER (part-time 8 hours per week)
£2968.62 pro rata (£13,729.88 pa)
SIR ALISTER HARDY FOUNDATION FOR OCEAN SCIENCE
SAHFOS manages the Continuous Plankton Recorder Survey - the longest, most geographically extensive marine biological survey in the world. It contains a unique dataset of marine biodiversity using the ecological status of plankton to generate biological indicators for climate shifts. The plankton form the base of the food-web that supports fish, marine mammals and seabirds.
The science that SAHFOS carries out provides indicators of ocean health, marine biodiversity, climate impact, marine pollution and ocean acidification. The CPR Survey which has historically focused in the N Atlantic, N Pacific and Southern Ocean is beginning to 'Go Global' with new surveys in ocean basins such as the Arctic Ocean and Norwegian Sea. These new areas will provide further invaluable data to inform scientists, Government and society of the health and biodiversity of our oceans.
SAHFOS is a UK registered charity and invites applications for the part-time post (8 hours) of Silk Preparer to support a dedicated team of workshop technicians who currently produce silk for SAHFOS tow routes and for export to all our Global partners. The prepared silk forms a moving part of the Continuous Plankton Recorder mechanism and filters the plankton from the water over long distances towed by ships of opportunity.
All the silks are hand prepared and the role requires a high degree of accuracy, consistency and attention to detail. You will be well organised and motivated and keen to work as a part of a team. An interest in marine science would be helpful but is not essential.
The 8 hours may be worked over 2 x 4 hours and the working days are to be agreed. However all appointments carry a liability to extra attendance if required.
SAHFOS operates a Group Personal Pension Plan. A sum equivalent to 10% of the employee's salary will be contributed by the Foundation on successful completion of the probation period of 6 months; this is not backdated.
The annual leave allowance is 12 days pro rata (30 days pa) plus statutory Bank Holidays.
To apply send a covering letter, CV and names and contact details of two referees by Friday 7 December to:
